Fujifilm X-T4 Full Review - Landscape Photography

Today I am here to share my full review of the long-anticipated announcement of the Fujifilm X-T4. Off the cuff, this may seem like an early release, only a year and a half after the Fujifilm X-T3. Additionally, many people may be disappointed and annoyed with the initial release. However, put yourself in Fujifilm's shoes, Olympics AND the Olympics being in Fujifilm's backyard of Japan - come on, life's about taking opportunities! 

Then the Coronavirus strikes, and well, I guess we are just in luck - so let's dive in!

The Fujifilm X-T4 got released with three significant physical differences in comparison to its predecessor. However, I understand that these upgrade (if you call them upgrades) may not be necessary to a specific audience if you call them upgrades. Throughout this article, we'll cover the significant differences alongside the minor internal changes.

Fujifilm X-T4 Dimensions

Firstly, straight out the box, the Fujifilm X-T4 does feel slightly larger in hand due to the new IBIS system. However, don't expect substantial changes as far as size and weight. (compared to NON-IBIS X-T lineup)

• Fujifilm X-H1 - 139.8 x 97.3 x 85.5mm @ 673grams
• Fujifilm X-T3 - 132.5 x 92.8 x 58.8 mm @ 539grams
• Fujifilm X-T4 - 134.6 x 92.8 63.8 mm @ 607grams

Secondly, the X-H1 is still streets ahead regarding the ergonomics and comfort with that more substantial handgrip. Additionally, I've already covered this on a completely different blog, which you can read here.

Finally, the IBIS will offer 5 Stops of stabilisation. When paired with a stabilised lens, that can go up to 6.5 stops of stability. Furthermore, the IBIS system is now a magnetic system, compared to a spring system in the older X-H1 cameras. As a result, it's 30% smaller and 20% lighter, something I can't wait to test out more in the future.

NP-W235 Fuji's New Battery

The fourth-generation X-T series has finally brought us a new long-awaited battery. Finally, rejoice happy snappers and 4K shooters. Battery ratings of the old batteries compared to new cells:

Battery ratings:

• NP-W126S - 390 Shots
• NP-W235 - 500 Shots (600 shots on economy Mode)

Finally, a larger battery is something I've been calling out for, for years! Videographers, event or wedding photographers who demand high-end professional systems need a system that doesn't hinder their long-day shooting!

Even with the IBIS system, the new battery gives a tremendous and well-deserved upgrade for the X-T line up.

Fujifilm X-T4 Flip Screen

The third and final significant physical upgrade is the flip screen, something you'll love or love to hate! Firstly, as a photographer purest, I understand there may be photographers out there that dislike the new design.

Firstly, the idea of being able to compose me for a piece to camera for my YouTube content will make my life so much easier. 

Secondly, paired with a gimbal working for high-end clients, placing the screen outside the rig will increase workflow efficiency.

Additionally, the fully articulating screen increases the weather sealing and allows for more comprehensive screen protection. An appreciate the feature for an adventure and travel photographer like myself.

Fujifilm X-T4 Features

Below is a list of features found on the Fujifilm X-T4 that are noticeable upgrades not showcased on any other Fujifilm X-T camera. The features that are worth noting are: 

• USB-C 30W Fast charging
• 15fps Mechanical shutter
• Multiple boost modes
• Improved screen resolution
• Additional Film simulations
• Removed exposure metering, replaced Movie/Photo mode.
• Ultrasonic Vibration Sensor Clean
• TIFF files @8/16bit
• 240fps in 1080p

Additionally, other features should be noted. 

Firstly, significantly improved AF performance with enhanced face and eye detection. (speed readout of 0.02 seconds) 

Secondly, the option to save photo and video settings separately, finally making this camera a superb hybrid system. Recording in F-LOG now displays in BT.709, dual SD card recording for video, a separate quick menu for video/photo. 

Thirdly, these may seem like minor changes, but changes that consumers have been screaming out for. I would certainly agree they are aimed at the videographer. Therefore, who is this camera for? Let's find out...

Full Review of the Fujifilm X-T4 - How good is it?

In conclusion, a full review of the Fujifilm X-T4 first impressions are excellent. Personally, the Fujifilm X-T4 is the near-perfect camera! Two years ago, on a vlog about the Fujifilm X-H1, I asked for better AF, a larger battery and a flip screen - is it too early to celebrate?

Finally, I would prefer to look at the Fujifilm X-T4 as a Fujifilm X-T3(s) as it's not sufficient enough upgrade for some people. 

However, for photographers, this may not be a worthy enough upgrade from the Fujifilm X-T3. You can read my comparison vlog here.
